Outreach with non-conservators has always been a particular interest. The War Heritage Roadshow with Australia's Veterans Association and the Univeristy of Melbourne provided a perfect platform for this. The Roadshow was a series of events in regional Victoria that invited locals to bring their war-related heirlooms. Experts then supplied historical background, provenance or conservation advice for the item.
My role in the show was two-fold. First, I designed advertising for the events (that's my hand in the photo!), information sheets covering basic conservation and research practices, and posters highlighting unique objects found in the show. Second, I actually travelled to several of the events and provided first-hand assistance to the conservation experts or helped document the event. Doing so required knowledge of the audience and their needs. For instance, the language on the pamphlets was clear, plenty of explanatory pictures were used, and a larger font size employed for a generally older audience.
Articles covering the Roadshow's impact can be found here, while the information sheets I designed can be found here.
